One of the first things I did when I joined my current employer 3 years ago was to look at our energy supply contracts; multiple gas, HH electricity and NHH electricity contracts, all supplied through one of the larger energy brokers.
My first opportunity to change any of the contracts was to look at our NHH electricity contracts, about 46 separate supply contracts in all.
Fortuitously James Robson made contact to introduce Powerful Allies, just at the right time, and I was able to invite him to test the market for me.
This gave amazing results. Our existing incumbent broker was recommending we stayed with our existing supplier with a cost increase of circa 18%. James Robson and his dedicated team at Powerful Allies were able to offer a new two year contract with an increase of just 1.67%. Needless to say after some verification and due diligence we opted for the new supplier deal.
That was back in 2016 and since then James has negotiated a 2 year extension to our existing gas contracts (48) with a negligible increase taking us out to 2021 with price certainty.
Now in 2018 James and his team at Powerful Allies are looking at renegotiating our NHH contract for another two years.
Earlier this year they negotiated a new HH contract for two years with an increase of less than 2% whilst the incumbent supplier was offering an eligibly comparable contract proposal for a contract increase of over 12% .
I can therefore fully recommend James Robson and his small dedicated team at Powerful Allies, who offer a dedicated personal service and will negotiate very competitive offers for gas and electricity (HH and NHH) contracts with transparency. Once they secure the offer they let you know what their charges are, so that you know and have visibility of those charges.
Give them a go you won’t be disappointed.
Brian Rollason (Building Services Engineering Manager)
I was first contacted by Powerful Allies a couple of years ago when we were still ‘in contract’ with another broker/consultant. We were reviewing our current arrangements and James and his team guided me through our options ; they couldn’t have been more helpful. They explained in simple terms an industry which is too often obfuscated by the people giving ‘help and advice’. They have always been extremely helpful, responding to my queries promptly and with insight. Nothing is too much trouble. I have always found the whole team at Powerful Allies to be sincere, honest, trustworthy and very capable. They have certainly made my life easier! I would highly recommend them.
Vivien Sergeant (Procurement Manager)
Powerful Allies Ltd have acted as our energy brokers for the last three years ensuring transparent procurement of electricity and gas. In addition, they have provided proactive customer care, meeting our needs with a calm, reliable approach thankfully devoid of the jargon that bestrides the utilities market.
Jaret Bennett (Health, Safety & Environment Manager)
AFC Bournemouth has worked with Powerful Allies for several years and we remain very content with the service provided. Information and options are given in a comprehensive, straightforward manner and there is no pressure applied to make one choice over another. James and his team are a pleasure to deal with.
Liz Finney (General Manager)
Salisbury Cathedral School is one of the oldest and most respected Independent Schools in the country, yet in common with others in the sector, we face considerable challenges on a daily basis. Consequently, it was a shock for me to discover that the school had been unwittingly locked into hugely damaging energy contracts, and our energy costs were spiralling out of control. My staff and I were placed under considerable stress at a time when we were working day and night to manage the fallout from COVID.
Fortunately I contacted Powerful Allies. James and his team were familiar with the School, and immediately took control of the situation. They worked behind the scenes with our suppliers and successfully persuaded them to reverse the contracts which had been set up without our authority. They then provided the brief to our solicitor to enable us to recover all the costs we had incurred to date.
I understand from James that mis-selling of energy contracts is reaching epidemic proportions, and urge other schools to contact Powerful Allies if there is any suspicion of wrong-doing. It is certainly worth asking them to look at your current contracts in any event.
Clive Marriott (Head Master)
We cannot thank you enough for making the effort to meet with us yesterday. Your expertise is adding huge value to the school, and the boys, and we are extremely grateful.
We are looking forward to the new gas meters and continuing to work with you moving forward.
Tom Wates (Director of Operations)
It has been a pleasure to work with Powerful Allies to both source our energy needs for our Trust but also to get their support with a difficult issue of a rogue broker who had signed the Trust up for expensive energy contracts on our behalf. James and his team were particularly helpful, professional and supportive in what was an extremely stressful situation.
Wendy Farrier (Director of Finance and Operations)
A really fantastic experience to listen to your ideas on energy saving and management. In truth, it will take 6 months to digest everything, but we want to make a difference and we will start some of the items you recommended.
I would always recommend Powerful Allies on utilities alone, but this added knowledge is massive plus point for bursars and estate managers. Thank you so much.
Steve Vickery (Bursar and Clerk to the Governors)
We first met Powerful Allies at the ISBA conference last year and invited them afterwards to meet with us. We have found their approach to be professional, honest, transparent and knowledgeable. They have helped us to resolve some difficult issues. We would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for an expert in the procurement and management of utility services.
We have been really pleased with the service provided by Powerful Allies. They took time to get to know us and understand our needs, and as a result provided strong analysis and advice that led to significant cost savings in a market where prices had risen sharply. Their ongoing support and response to follow-up questions and renewals has been similarly impressive.
Danny Boswell (Bursar)
We are all at Sheffield City Trust delighted with the service we have been getting from Powerful Allies.
We knew that Sean would look after us for sure, but the overall delivery has been absolutely top notch and we have already secured significant savings.
You clearly have an excellent team.
We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with your organisation.
Martin Crookes (Head of Estates)
I have joined a long (and growing) list of Powerful Allies’ very satisfied clients. What sets them apart from other energy brokers is their utter commitment to transparency in the opaque world of energy pricing. James Robson’s opening gambit was a clear explication of the poorly regulated energy market and followed up with the clearest and most detailed narrative on the hidden costs that I have heard. The analysis of his excellent team (a team which includes a friendly office Labrador!) and their subsequent pricing made my decision to opt for Powerful Allies very simple indeed.
Justin Moore (Bursar)
In our dealings with Powerful Allies, they have been helpful, transparent and straightforward. Their assistance and expertise have enabled St George’s Weybridge to sign contracts that have significantly benefited both our schools. I would happily recommend them to other schools.
Greg Cole (Bursar)
We have really enjoyed our working relationship with Powerful Allies. They have enabled a clarity of understanding of the market we haven’t previously enjoyed, which has in turn presented the opportunity to plan and control expenditure whilst seeking best value along the way. The client centric nature of the business makes them a pleasure to work with and enables a useful freedom of conversation pertaining to the utilities.
James Petrie (Estates Bursar)
Powerful Allies were recommended to us by SPORTA and the confidence in their ability to deliver the required attention to detail continues to exceed our expectations in the procurement and ongoing management of utility services. A stress free, professional service across all our sites and one less budget line to worry about!
Chris Bladen (Operations Director)
We at Truro School have worked with Powerful Allies for some time. They have been clear and helpful identifying faults in existing contracts and showing where savings can be made. They are a small personal team who are all friendly, professional and always willing to answer my most basic questions. The energy market can be confusing and it is very hard to compare prices from the many brokers who can cold call me on an almost daily basis. It seem that it is standard practice to hide charges and make rates appear cheaper than the later bills will be. Powerful Allies are very open about all the energy costs and find deals that are best fit for the school’s needs. I would be happy to recommend them to other schools who need a clear and straightforward partner in the energy market.
Neil Rudge (Facilities Manager)
Powerful Allies provide a comprehensive and transparent service, they take the time to understand our needs and have worked hard to build a positive relationship. James and the team are a delight to deal with, and during times of increasing financial pressure on schools they have returned significant savings on our energy costs. I recommend them without hesitation, and encourage other schools and academies to allow Powerful Allies the opportunity to make savings for you too.
Caroline Antrobus (Bursar)
Powerful Allies were able to make our energy choices simple! They ensured we achieved cost savings and an effective strategy for future energy management. The savings in time and money have been a huge benefit to the school. We feel they have truly bought in to partnering with us and they are with us for the long term. Even though we’re a small school not spending seven figure sums on energy, Powerful Allies still looked after us very well.
Julie Bromilow (Bursar)
For the second time in as many jobs I joined a new school to find that renewal of energy contracts was not only imminent but had not been attended to. For the second time… I was relieved to be able to turn to Powerful Allies for clear, comprehensible and extremely competitive quotes that were provided in very short order with a minimum of effort on my part. And for the second time… I was able to part company with another broker and secure really good deals through Powerful Allies. As I compare notes with other bursars / business managers about their energy contracts and watch what is happening in the marketplace, I am patting myself on the back for a job well done …for the second time!
John Cunningham (School Business Manager)
For several years now I have relied on Powerful Allies to source and implement our energy contracts, they have proved to be infallible! They provide me with clear explanations of the market place and always give me comparisons for various suppliers. Tariffs are explained fully and we always feel confident with their recommendations.
James and the team have helped us through some difficult situations with energy supplier contracts, his advice and guidance is always professional and also friendly.
Marion Lower (Business Manager)
Powerful Allies provide a highly professional service, clearly explaining the complex energy market and how it works to a layman, breaking down the tariffs and fees and ultimately they gave me the confidence to make an informed decision. Renewing energy contracts is a minefield and can be badly done through lack of understanding and lack of time to scrutinise the options. Powerful Allies have a straightforward and honest approach, work with you to find the right solution for you rather than pushing a service and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them.
Alexandra D’Arcy-Irvine (School Business Manager)
The Wren Free School was formed in 2015 by a group of dedicated parents, wishing to see an increase in the Secondary education provision in West Reading, Berkshire. The first three years were spent in temporary buildings, whilst each year growing the school intake by a further 168 students. By 2018 we finally had our wonderful, brand new, state of the art permanent building, only problem was the Energy bills which started to arrive were enormous…. which meant the CO2 emissions were too…
We knew the Building Management System and the various controls around the building were complex – air conditioning, solar panels, heating and lighting sensors and controls were all running at once and it was not easy to understand. We enlisted student volunteers to help us record temperatures at various times of day around the building over one month – discovering the top floor was by far the hottest in the building – we were then able to completely turn off the heating on the top floor. Following advice from the Ashden ‘Less CO2’ scheme we then undertook an Energy Audit with Powerful Allies in January 2020. This was a revelation and immediately led to a complete reset of the various timer, heating and ventilation systems around the building, ensuring they began to work as efficiently as possible.
Following this audit we immediately saw our Energy reduce from around 10,000 kg CO2 emitted per month, to just 7,000. The baseline overnight levels for the building practically halved, and monthly electricity and gas bills dropped immediately from around £8,500 per month combined, to around £5,500 per month. We are currently studying the overnight baseline levels yet further – to understand why there is any baseline activity at all, and reduce this even further, where possible. This Energy reduction has been beyond our wildest dreams and has really made an impact on our CO2 emissions this year – imagine the savings over a decade! We fully expect our EPC Rating to improve this year as a result of the actions taken. Powerful Allies were helpful, informative, knowledgeable and very professional throughout, can highly recommend them.
Lorraine Yearwood (Finance Officer / Sustainability Representative)
Powerful Allies not only made and continue to make substantial savings for the Estate but, through reconciling all of the meters, have changed what was once an annual accounting nightmare into a mere breeze in the park. Their transparent and friendly energy procurement service has transformed a formerly expensive chore into a cost saving pleasure. I cannot recommend them more highly.
Lady Olivia Clark (Proprietor)
We have recently started to work alongside Powerful Allies who have looked into our current charges for our utilities. They have managed to obtain greatly reduced rates and have provided us with a professional and friendly service. I would say that the changeover process has been very smooth and the service has not only saved me time but also money. I would feel very happy to recommend them.
Dave Grogan (Practice Manager)
We’ve been using Powerful Allies at the Bingham for the past four years and over that time, they’ve saved us a huge amount of money. My main contact is James, who I find very pro-active and not pushy at all – I like that he always asks if I have a preference for a particular supplier before proceeding and is transparent in his fees. He has a very personable approach and is just a great person to deal with.
Erick Kervaon (General Manager)
I first encountered the Powerful Allies team some five years ago and have watched them grow through hard work, determination and above all else ‘Integrity’.
Unfortunately, despite the high levels of spend, the world of energy procurement is still unregulated and it really is a ‘Wild West’ out there when choosing the right Energy Broker.
As an Energy Manager, I receive numerous calls each and every week, often from the same companies telling me why they are the biggest, best or most professional Energy Brokerage in the country. They go on to add how their services are completely free of charge, some go straight to “do you have a pen, so you can write down the fantastic prices I am able to offer you today?”
Powerful Allies are completely different; they never bombard people with a hard sell, they are completely transparent and tell it as it is. They aren’t afraid of the competition and expose brokers which hide behind mystique to protect their own position.
I have personally recommended Powerful Allies to some of my Energy Manager colleagues and my own clients, to which I have only ever had positive feedback. Energy in the Sports Leisure and Entertainment Industry is one of our most significant spends, so why not ask for a no obligation price comparison?
We have been hugely impressed with the highly-ethical and professional way that James and the team at Powerful Allies go about bringing greater transparency and fairness to the unregulated and opaque world of energy procurement. Their advice is uncomplicated, impartial, open, commercial but fair. And we at Danes Hill look forward to establishing a long-term collaboration with them in the future, and we hope that James and his team will become in every real sense a powerful ally in helping Danes Hill school to secure best value for money in its energy requirements going forward.
Richard Quinn (Bursar)
We receive calls virtually every day from energy brokers, and so I was initially quite sceptical when James first came to meet me. But their approach is different and transparent; very quickly Powerful Allies were able to set up new contracts which are saving us a very considerable sum, in addition to negotiating a full CCL rebate for us. The process was very simple from my perspective.
Dave Jones (Financial Controller)
For several years now we have relied on Powerful Allies to assist with our energy purchasing, both electricity and gas. They always bring a range of options to the table for consideration and have streamlined our energy purchasing such that our various supply needs are now timed to coincide. James and his team save us many hours every year and ensure that we are obtaining best value for money with regard to energy supplies.
Linda Stuart (Business Manager)
